From Booklist
Editors Kaldas and Mattawa have put together a timely and moving collection of stories by 19 American authors of Lebanese, Syrian, Egyptian, Palestinian, and Libyan descent. Many tell stories of immigrants, some in a Philadelphia row house, others in Yonkers, Southern California, and a small Illinois town, each of whom sees America as "a vast gray place of secrets and hidden things," a place offering hope and possibilities while at the same time withdrawing them. Some stories tell the common but always poignant tale of children who assimilate quickly, babbling away in English while their parents struggle with that "miserable chaotic language." Other tales reflect the many personal injustices experienced by Arab Americans after 9/11, including an abused wife ignored by the police until after that fateful day, when they finally jail her husband--not for abusing her but for INS violations. Ultimately, this gathering of Arab American stories underlines the similarities between recent immigrants and their American neighbors, thus emphasizing all that we have in common beneath the veneer of culture. Owner Reviews, Ratings, Comments and Criticism
You don't have to be an Arab American to appreciate this collection of short stories. Some of the voices may not be familiar, but many of the stories are. At times heartbreaking, at times hilarious, each story represents a facet of the human experience. If you consider yourself to be a literary adventurer, add this anthology to your "to do" list.
